Types of diabetes
Diabetes is a growing disease all over the world because of our lifestyle that is not always healthy. With the time of sugars in full swing, it seems to us a good period to inform you a little more on the subject.
The prediabetes
Approximately one in five Quebecers would suffer from pre-diabetes. A person has pre-diabetes when his or her blood glucose level is higher than normal, but not enough to diagnose diabetes. This is a wake-up call that the person might suffer from type 2 diabetes in the short term.
Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood. This represents 10% of diabetes cases. The pancreas of these people do not make insulin so they need to receive daily injections.
Type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and accounts for 90% of cases. It manifests itself in adulthood. It is possible to prevent this type of diabetes by adopting a healthy diet, doing physical activity and having good stress management.
Pregnancy Diabetes
This diabetes appears late in the second quarter to the third trimester. Between 2% and 4% of pregnancies will develop this diabetes. It manifests itself in an increase in blood glucose and this, only during pregnancy. In 80% of cases, it disappears after pregnancy, but the mother then becomes more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
