Triangular Bandages

Place the triangular bandage under the injured arm, with one point directed towards the elbow. Bring the two upper points around each side of the neck and tie them in the hollow of the neck, without pressing on the vertebrae. Fold the point at the elbow and secure it with a safety pin. The arm should be held at waist height, with the elbow at a 90° angle. If a fracture is suspected, do not attempt to reposition the arm and call 911 immediately.

The triangular bandage is very versatile. Folded into a strip, it can be used as a retaining bandage for a compress on the head, torso, or a limb. It can also be used to immobilize a dislocated shoulder, create a capeline bandage on the head, hold a splint in place, or apply temporary compression to an injury while waiting for help. Its size and shape allow it to adapt to almost any area of the body.

Yes. The CSA Z1220 standard requires triangular bandages in first aid kits in Canadian workplaces. The number required varies according to the level of risk and the number of employees. A Level 2 or 3 kit generally contains 1 to 4 triangular bandages. This requirement applies in all Canadian provinces, including Ontario (WSIB), British Columbia (WorkSafeBC), and Alberta (WCB).
