To maintain pressure over time, secure the pads with a compression bandage or gauze bandage. If blood soaks through the pads, add more on top without removing the ones already in place, and continue to apply pressure.

A sterile gauze compress maintains its sterility until the expiration date indicated on the individual packaging, provided that the packaging is intact and stored in a dry place, away from heat and direct light. Once the packaging is opened or damaged, the compress loses its guarantee of sterility and should no longer be used on an open wound. Regularly check the dates in your first aid kits.
