What to do if your baby is choking? The right steps to take to react quickly
A baby choking can happen in seconds.
Here are the right steps to take, step by step, to intervene quickly and safely.
When an ordinary moment turns into an emergency (watch the video)
Imagine: everything is fine, your baby is playing or eating a snack... and suddenly, they stop breathing. They stop crying. Their face changes color.
It's one of the most frightening scenarios for a parent or caregiver. But with the right reflexes, you can make all the difference.
Signs a baby is really choking
Before panicking, it's important to recognize the signs. A choking baby will not be able to cry, breathe, or cough. You might see them turn red, then turn bluish, or even become limp and silent.
If the baby is still coughing or crying, let them do it — that means they are trying to dislodge the object themselves. Otherwise, act immediately.
Step 1: 5 back blows

-
Hold the baby face down on your forearm.
-
Support their head with your hand; it should be lower than their body.
-
With the heel of your hand, give 5 firm blows between the shoulder blades.
This is a simple but super effective action to dislodge the stuck object.
Step 2: 5 chest compressions

-
Gently turn the baby onto their back, still keeping their head lower.
-
Place two fingers in the center of their chest, just below the nipple line.
-
Give 5 quick compressions, about 1 to 2 cm deep.
You alternate these two steps (blows + compressions) until the baby breathes again or the object comes out.
Call for help as soon as possible
As soon as you can, call 911. If you are alone, perform an initial series of actions, then call. The important thing is to never leave the baby, except to call for help.
